A kitchen and family room plan to complete a family’s forever home, with room to grow and add over time.

Clean, white kitchen with long island, industrial metal white stools, and antique milk glass pendant shades and Edison filament bulbs overhead. Countertops are black soapstone with old fashioned two-hole bridge faucet and integrated drainboard. Stainless steel French door refrigerator is at the left of the kitchen back wall and blue Lacanche range with brass accents is in the middle, with white subway tile and contrast dark grout. Flooring is medium stained pine matching existing flooring in home. Natural light filters from the left window with a vintage wood framed tufted sofa with yellow velvet.

Spotlight on: Space Planning

While fortunate to have square footage, the structure required some tough decisions to locate the island. We also explored relocating the powder room, laundry area, and fireplace, while keeping in mind plumbing and mechanical systems. After reviewing travel patterns and client preferences, we landed on Plan D for the Kitchen. After living in the space, they opted for a more simplified Family Room with custom millwork on the right wall and soft furnishings that could stand up to daily life with two young boys, two dogs, and a cat.
